Does the book include a Traveling Coin?
Not just yet. The Traveling Coin: The Journey Begins introduces Gus, the story, and the idea behind The Traveling Coin.
Physical Traveling Coins will be included with the third book in the series, The Hidden Coin.
What is The Traveling Coin?
The Traveling Coin is a story and community project built around a simple idea:
Everyone has something to contribute.
Through the books, Traveling Coins, and the journeys they create, families, classrooms, and communities are encouraged to work together, help in their own way, and pass that spirit of contribution forward.
The goal is to build a team anyone can be part of.
No tryouts. No one left out.
What do you mean by “contribution”?
Contribution doesn’t have to be big.
It could mean collecting canned goods for a local food pantry, donating gently used clothes or coats to a shelter, assembling hygiene kits for families in need, gathering school supplies for students, collecting food and blankets for an animal shelter, or working together to clean up a park, beach, or neighborhood.
What matters isn’t the size of the contribution. It’s recognizing a need, deciding how your team can help, and doing something together that leaves your community a little better than you found it.
Everyone has something they can bring to the team.
Can schools and classrooms use the book?
Absolutely. In many ways, schools are where The Traveling Coin was built to come alive.
The story gives students a way to explore contribution, belonging, teamwork, responsibility, empathy, and community through something they can actually participate in—not simply something they are asked to learn about.
Supporting SEL-informed classroom materials and activities are being developed to help educators take the ideas in the story beyond the read-aloud. Students can reflect on what they have to contribute, work together to identify a need in their community, choose a contribution as a team, and put that idea into action.
Schools are also serving as the first beta-testing environment for the Traveling Coin experience itself. We want educators and students to help us learn what works, what keeps children engaged, and how the coin can best connect one classroom’s contribution to the next.
The goal goes beyond teaching children to be kind.
It is helping them experience what it feels like to belong to a team, recognize that they have something valuable to contribute, and see what can happen when people work together.
